Becoming a hobbyist PCN Fighter

Realistically, can a layperson become proficient in fighting PCNs and helping others to fight theirs without undertaking any sort of formal study of law?

I was reading Hippocrates' thread from a few years ago about how to encourage more people to fight their PCNs, and there was also some discussion about the amount of appellants against willing representatives and resourcing and logistics, etc.

I understand that this would naturally take time and a lot of experience. I'm not sure to what extent the regulars on here have undertaken a formal study of law, and if they currently practice law, or are perhaps students?

I ask in what ways could I start to be able to fight PCNs all the way to adjudication. I do often simply read cases on here and on the appeals register, but I don't think that will do much in the way of applicable knowledge.

I don't personally have any formal legal training. I first got involved in fighting private parking charges after being on the receiving end of an unfair one (and being stubborn enough to fight it on principle).

So I guess it's just a process you have to go through and as you start fighting more you get to grips with procedures, processes, legislation, what actually may render a PCN invalid in accordance with the law, etc.

I know someone who's been fighting all his PCNs since forever, and it does seem to be an experience thing. I guess what I'm wondering is how can one be more intentional about it rather than just letting experience alone take them through it, which would also mean relying on getting PCNs.

I started out by getting help on Pepipoo with a couple of my own PCNs which were successfully challenged. Both got a bit technical which I enjoyed.

Then my sister got a box junction PCN which I helped her with. That one went to adjudication which I attended on her behalf and won.

After that I started specialising in box junction cases and chipping in on more cases as my confidence grew. My day job also involves some exposure to lawyers and legal documents so that helps a bit too.

Still consider myself a bit of a novice in most respects but try and chip in where I understand what's going on. It's become a bit of a hobby!

Are they already on this forum?

AFAIK, the only qualified and practising lawyer on this site is me (others may exist incognito). IIRC, there is also a retired solicitor knocking around.
I am not qualified to give legal advice in the UK. While I will do my best to help you, you should not rely on my advice as if it was given by a lawyer qualified in the UK.

Sounds like 'Nosy Parker', he's retired but maintains his SRA regulation and has picked up the odd private parking case. Doesn't post much on here these days due to other commitments.

Some of us know more than some of the tribunal adjudicators, who are lawyers but vary in their knowledge although they are supposed to be appraised.

At least one poster on here is not qualified to practice law but holds a law degree. He is likely to have a better understanding of the principles of public law than the man in the street, but know far less about the processes and application of decriminalised parking enforcement than a pitch-perfect comedian dressing up in Trafalgar Square.
I am responsible for the accuracy of the information I post, not your ability to comprehend it.

If watching Judge Judy counts, then I'm qualified. :)
