Self adhesive number plate UK advise please
« on: September 30, 2024, 01:49:27 pm »
Hi , i have a 1972 MGB GT registered as a historic vehicle with the dvla .I am placing a new chrome front bumper on the car and didnt fancy drilling holes to fix brackets and a number plate and was hoping to fix a self adhesive one that conforms to BS on the front bonnet as horizontal and vertical as i can get it ...I have seen photos of MGs with plates on the front bumper but when asking on the MG forum i just cant get a definitive answer ,dvla will not give a answer they just point me to the legislation regarding construction of the plate etc...Local bobby i know could not answer either ....I have no problem fixing one on the bumper if it is the legal thing to do but before i do i thought i would try and find out if i can put one on the bonnet before hand..I was told that if it spoils the aesthetics of the car i could put the plate on the bonnet were reasonably practicable ...

There are a few plate companies that will make up a  self adhesive BS plate (not a show plate ) and i would have to send in documents as you would with the standard plate ..if anyone can help on this it would be appreciated but as said i am not going to make a big deal of it if i cant ...Thanks

With a "historic" vehicle, I'd have thought authenticity would be paramount. Doesn't placing the plate on the bonnet fail that test?

Straight answer is no , if plates are to BS standard plates on bonnet have past MOT as in all Etypes you see on the road with them on bonnet ….

why not put a sticky one on and see if you get a tug from plod.
I would say it's unlikely.
As far as the MOT pass issue you mention is concerned, it's irrelevant. If plod considers correctly (often they dont) the plate to fail construction and use regs then it's a fine or court.

As a classic car enthusiast, as far as historical accuracy is concerned, unless your MG is a rally replica then the plate should be hanging on the bumper not stuck on the bonnet. And...comparing an MGB in any guise to an E type? :(  :(  No. just No.

Searching Google Images on '1972 MGB GT' reveals most front plates below the bumper, some on it (including

and two on the bonnet amongst the 100s of results.

I seem to remember looking at this years ago. I think the conclusion was that it might be illegal but nobody was likely to care.
