RIP pepipoo - but what happened?
« on: »
Hey, I was a long time user of peppipoo, got me out of many ruts over the years and many thanks to the people that helped, it was always the usual regulars too so top job to those guys! I would donate a few bob every time I got a ticket canceled (almost ever time) loved the obscurity of the site itself.

Just wondering if this is the same site with a rebrand, still the same old folk? If not then what happened with the original site? would be nice to know, so many memories of telling people the odd name and them having a giggle with it.

Cheers!

No, this is not the same site with a rebrand. This site was set up by CP and I when Pepipoo fell over. A lot of the regular posters have come here.

My normal tech person opinion, it had come to the end of its life in the owners mind, possibly in others too, and the domain expiry issue, alongside other running costs in terms of
updating the forum software and the time costs associated with that, meant that it was the end. The forum software could also have been breached by a bad actor using an exploit of the old forum software, who have then since gained access to the server and wiped most of the files (and since the owners were awol, or almost completely awol, that wasn't spotted nor acted upon).

My cynical opinion, it was finally taken down after the owners (who seemed to be awol), were given an offer they couldn't refuse from a third party, to just let it die. Perhaps the old site was preventing some revenue from being collected.

As I found out, the company has now been wound up according to Companies House.
Bus driving since 1973. My advice, if you have a PSV licence, destroy it when you get to 65 or you'll be forever in demand.

My cynical view is this: the owners had basically lost interest in the whole thing, pepipoo was effectively created for criminal cases when there were many arguable defences and tactics that made it worthwhile. With virtually all loopholes closed (except the unsigned route in Scotland), they simply lost interest and moved on to other things, whether that is setting up a new business, grandchildren or whatever else we will likely never know. The last meaningful contact from the pepipoo owners was when Fredd put the "thank you to NHS workers" link at the top of the forum banner at some point in 2020, in the middle of a COVID lockdown.

There were some later posts from the someone claiming to be the owners of the site, but I'm not sure I saw anything posted from Fredd's account ever again.

It seems likely that the £30k that was sat in the company was distributed out (again, maybe for the grandchildren?) and the company was dissolved, in all likelihood because it made no sense to keep paying for accountants and companies house fees and penalties if the whole thing had (as far as the owners were concerned) ran its course.

Ultimately the owners of pepipoo never made any succession plans and never expressed any interest in passing the site on to anyone else once their personal interest in the site had elapsed, so it was always bound to die once they decided to dedicate themselves to other things.
