Challenging placement of a speed camera
« on: »
My google-fu has been defeated.

Does anyone know of good resources for challenging the placement of a speed camera?
E.g. blogs by those who failed / succeeded?

Most search results are related to challenging speed camera tickets rather than the installation itself.
There's a couple of sites that cover the legislation for initial placement but don't really cover the precise actuals of how cameras are re-justified by police/LAs on an ongoing basis.

AFAIK there is no such legislation, merely guidance. See https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a819278e5274a2e87dbe588/dft-circular-0107.pdf

Why do you want to challenge one?

The usual reasons for placing a camera - e.g. deaths/serious injuries per year, or >X% of traffic is speeding, don't appear to apply to one locally, so I want to know what the parameters are for keeping such a camera, so I can request the appropriate stats from the LA. With a view to getting rid of course.

The parameters are probably whatever the local council have decided. Have you tried asking them?

Why do you want to get rid?

Section 95A of the Highways Act 1980:

Quote
A highway authority may install and maintain on or near a highway structures and equipment for the detection of traffic offences or offences under section 11 of the HGV Road User Levy Act 2013 (using or keeping heavy goods vehicle if HGV road user levy not paid)
