The Flame Pit / Re: Ticketed at 22MPH? (Really?)
« on: April 13, 2026, 01:46:53 pm »
There's quite a few other reports on the back of that one, though some seem to credit The Telegraph with the original story.
Inevitably it's being politicised by various media, here in the Telegraph via archive ph

Badenoch: Drivers shouldn’t be fined for doing 22 in a 20mph zone
Tory leader says police should be catching thieves rather than targeting motorists

Kemi Badenoch has suggested that motorists should not be fined for exceeding 20mph speed limits by a couple of miles per hour.
The Conservative Party leader argued that enforcing the lower limit was not always a good use of police time as shoplifting and burglaries surge nationwide...........
Between 2017 and 2023, the equivalent of one in every four cars registered in London was given a speeding fine for exceeding 20mph.
Mrs Badenoch went on to recall being told by an MP about a taxi driver in their constituency who lost his licence after driving at 21mph three times in a 20mph zone.
She continued: “That’s his livelihood. I’m not sure that that’s fair

The Flame Pit / Historic (classic) vehicles: MOT exemption criteria
« on: March 26, 2026, 08:35:31 pm »
Hello, as some members may be aware, the MOT exemption criteria changed on 10th March.
I'm both raising a query, and also making folk aware in case anyone on here is affected.
These are the new criteria

I've no objection to having my vehicles MOT tested, though I've several motorcycles legitimately historic and MOT exempt, as they are broadly unmodified.

As I read it, new regs have done away with the 30 year substantial mods rule, and removed the MOT exemption completely for kit cars, as well as changing the criteria for what qualifies as substantial mods.
It seems to have been brought in with little publicity, so how are the public to know?
I'm guessing/hoping it will become obvious at re-taxation time, as the website would reject, or I'd be reminded to check regs before claiming exemption; I'm not in a position to check that as my VEDs don't expire for several months.
An applicant might not even notice unless the website made it obvious that new rules have come into force.

On a personal note, two of the changes affect me directly with a couple of my vehicles.
I've a 1974 Air Portable Landrover, legitimately registered as historic but fitted with a Rover V8 30+ years ago (Old MOTs to prove that).
Previously, provided I retained enough original component parts, it was MOT exempt as the relevant substantial mod was done over 30 years ago.
Re-taxing it without an MOT never presented a problem.
I also run a Marlin kit car; it's correctly registered as a Marlin on the registration of the base vehicle, a 1973 Cortina.
Since it was built 30+ years ago, on an older base, it was a legit historic; I asked the DVLA myself who confirmed they were the rules at the time.

However, had I not seen a post, in a Marlin Owners group on Facebook, and subsequently specifically searched around elsewhere; (only GB News seemed to be covering it at the time), if I had gone out in the Marlin on the 12th of March as intended, I'd possibly be at risk of prosecution for driving without an MOT.

The Marlin passed an MOT today, and the Landrover is booked in next week.
The tester didn't know about these changes until I told him, and couldn't find any more information than me.
To be fair to him, his responsibility is the testing, not telling me whether I need one.

DVLA know I have several previously MOT exempt vehicles; they also have my phone number for texts, email address, and postal address.
Why haven't owners been informed as a matter of urgency?

This isn't a complaint about the change of regulations, I'm querying what could/would have happened had I been caught inadvertently breaking the law. I only found out it by chance.
In my case, I believe my insurance requires me to have an MOT if the vehicle needs one, so I could even be at risk of driving uninsured.
The insurance co. are quite happy with me driving an exempt vehicle without MOT.

Thanks
Bill

The Flame Pit / Private Parking Code of Practice Consultation
« on: July 11, 2025, 07:37:32 pm »
I've done a search, and can't see this elsewhere.
I Originally saw this from a Sheffield MP, Abtisam Mohamed on Twitter

Abtisam Mohamed  @Abtisam_Mohamed
I welcome the consultation on a new Private Parking Code of Practice and encourage as many people to respond outlining their concerns at

My own view is that the proposed changes do little to protect people from low-income backgrounds. The cap should be much lower than £100 and offering a 40% discount pressures motorists into paying, rather than exploring their options to appeal. Finally, the burden of debt recovery fees should not be placed on motorists, whatever the cost, and should be scrapped altogether.

We must seek to align closely with local authority run car parks, which are often cheaper, and I’ll be addressing the proposed changes with my colleagues.

I urge my constituents to engage with the consultation.

The Flame Pit / Re: Man arrested after secret filming shared on TikTok

From The GMP's own web page report

Man arrested following investigation into videos of women on nights out in Manchester
Published: 17:0327/11/2024
This morning (Wednesday 27 November 2024), we’ve arrested a 27-year-old man from Bradford on suspicion of voyeurism and harassment, in connection with several reports of women being followed, filmed, and harassed in Manchester City Centre.

This arrest is thought to be the first in the country linked with several viral videos on social media platforms appearing to have filmed women on nights out, some whilst in vulnerable positions.

As well as the widely viewed videos posted publicly, through further investigation, we found more content locked under paywalled accounts which included footage of suspected non-consensual nudity and upskirting.

After the issue was first brought to our attention, we made several appeals for anyone directly impacted by these videos to come forward. Many women did so, explaining the fear this had created for them, and the impact on their feeling of being safe whilst out at night.

Over the past few months, our neighbourhood team have worked in close consultation with the CPS to understand what next steps we could take with the reports received.

Speeding and other criminal offences / Re: Close pass
« on: June 02, 2024, 01:30:32 pm »
What have you actually received? I doubt whether it's a PCN.

Why would they measure "wheel to wheel"? It's not the cycle wheels that are in danger. You need a clear gap )1.5m) between the cyclist's body and the extremity of your vehicle (probably the mirror).

Without going into the merits of this case, most of the police photo illustrations I've seen do show the cycle wheel line.
e.g. a few random ones

Which isn't to say they've not been criticised

For me, main website up OK, but forum down.

IsItDown website shows both main site & forum responding to them, so probably pings OK

As far as I can tell, the domain name remains registered and paid for up until 2027.
Maybe a basic page could be re-hosted somewhere on the same URL, with a notice explaining the whereabouts of this site, in order to assist those unable to find it.
WHOIS Pepipoo details

Similarly, the Pepipoo Twitter account still seems to be nominally active, so maybe a message there too in order to help those searching for Pepipoo information on that platform.

Good luck with this site.
