Breakdown cover: Big brands Vs provider who use local garages
« on: »
hi folks
I know everyone will have varying experiences about their breakdown cover's provider. But still there must be somewhere consensus that who is much better than others. As we all know that there are couple of big brands who have their own patroling team. On the other hand there are breakdown cover providers who uses local garages. So, which one ideally should be preferred  given the fact that latter one is amassing more positive reviews (not sure why).

If you are a fix it yourself person, then the big brands are better, as they will either tow you on the spectacle frame or on their own trucks to where you want, so if you intend to fit a new alternator yourself on your drive for a fraction of garage prices, you want this option.

The cheaper ones use local contractors to recover you to their garage for a fix. If you would pay a garage anyway, you might prefer this.

It is possible to game the system by waiting until all the garages are closed to call it in, then it invokes proper recovery.

Is "Britannia rescue" a good brand who uses local network of garages instead of having own vehicles.

I've been with AutoAid for years - they use local firms, but recover you to a place of your choosing. Last time they recovered me in a friends van, they picked me up in Blackpool, transferred to a different recovery firm at Lymm services, then took the van back to my friends house with no issues whatsoever.

I tend to drive older vehicles so I've probably used them at least once most years I've been a member, and I've never had any issue getting recovered. Highly recommend.

I think most of these services that use local garages are probably only as good as their network of garages. I was with Britannia Rescue for a couple of years and had to use them once - the chap from one of the local garages who turned up was excellent (and arrived within 20 minutes). How much of that was down to luck is hard to tell - maybe all of their local garages are great, maybe I dropped on by breaking down near one of the good ones.
