DVLA Enforcement Centre Fine
« on: »
Hello all

I received a fine for not road taxing my previous car and its £450. Its an out of court settlement. This is monsterous amount of money are they kidding here? I sold the car around that time (12/02/25) and was positive it had road tax but I cant fine the docs. I checked online and it says untaxed since April 2024!! This can't be right and not sure what to do. Any ideas?

If you had taxed it you will presumably have bank statements to that effect showing payment? Seeking them out would seem a sensible first step.

Do you ordinarily tax your vehicle online? I got an email receipt/confirmation from DVLA last time I did so.

Have you checked your bank or card statements for around April 2024?

If you can't prove you taxed it, the £450 offer is the best you will get.

I checked my bank statements and found that I did buy another car back in April so I must of cancelled the road tax to use the new car. I couldn't get decent quote for insuranc eon the new car and ended up selling it and the old car must have remained without tax. After all this time I cant believe it. Is the court settlement fair?

The OOC figure is a standard amount, calculated from the tax evaded.

If it goes to court the guideline is something like £1,000 or five times the tax, whichever is greater.

Your choice!

In any event when you sell a car and inform the DVLA of this, now the rules have changed and the DVLA cancels your old road tax you paid on the car and sends you the remaining due for the remainder of your year as a refund by cheque to you at your V5 registered address. The new owner then has to tax it afresh.  the "old" way of selling cars with x months left on the tax has long since gone.

If you never received any cheque then maybe you never taxed it in the first place......
