speeding/ Inaccurate speedometer
« on: »
Hello,

I was driving down the "Limehouse Link Tunnel nr Hertsmere Rd W/B E14" and got flashed at the entrance, although the speed was slightly over 30mph (31maybe) Recorded speed on NIP 35mph, so I was slightly confused, upon taking a closer look the speedometer needle seems to be way below 0, my service is due in 20days, I keep up-to date with yearly check ups.

Any advice please?

You will be offered a course for that speed (assuming the limit is 30mph and you have not done a course in the last three years). Accept that and keep quiet about your inaccurate speedometer.

Does the needle stay there when the car is actually turned on? Because it would appear it is off in that picture.

As for the speeding, as much as it's a pain, take the speed awareness course that will almost certainly be offered (only if you've not taken one). If not, 3 points doesn't generally load insurance premiums like it used to.

If the speedo is under-reading, you need to get it fixed. If it just sits below the 0 when the engine is off, it is irrelevant.

Speeding is a strict liability offence. Not intending to speed (or not intending to speed noticably) is not a defence.

Yes it remains in the same position when turned on.

An inoperative speedometer is an offence. Get it fixed.

That looks like a modern(ish) car so the speedo is most likely operated electronically and will set to 0 with the ignition on  - often after going round the dial and back. Either way - as others have said, suck this one up and move on. Most of us have been there.

Well I'm having it serviced this week so will find out. I was driving past one of those "speed checkers" and the speed seemed to be slightly off. Thanks anyway. It's really frustrating, knowing I didn't speed intentionally.

Few ever do - but Mens Rea doesn't apply to many road offences!
