Speeding fine on the A1

Hi there
Can anyone help me
I borrowed a car and the main driver received a speeding fine on the A1, driving at 58mph exceeding the limit of 50mph
This is my first time ever having to deal with a speeding ticket, i have always tried keeping a clean sheet and Driving safely, never got any points in the past (or even speeding awareness courses as this can increase insurance quotes).
What are my options,
i don't think it was well signposted and does anyone know if by law there has to be markings on the road as there wasn't?

The main driver will not have received a speeding fine. Provided he is the Registered Keeper he will have received a "request for driver's details". A similar request will be sent to you after he has named you, and you will have to confirm you were the driver.

After that you should receive the offer of a speed awareness course (provided the bit of the A1 you were on was not in Scotland, where courses are not offered). This will cost you about £100 and a bit of your time, but no points. If you don't fancy that a fixed penalty of £100 and three points is the alternative.

i know but he told me i have to deal with it,
is there anyway i would be able to, not even receive an awareness course as it can increase my insurance quotes in the future

He will have to deal with it first by naming you as the driver. You should not respond to the notice addressed to him.

Nope, not once the police have your details. As far as know, none of the major insurers ask about speeding courses.

I mean, the way for the OP not to get anything is to not respond to the notice and let his friend get 6 points and a fine. They probably wouldn’t be his friend for much longer mind…

The SAC and often 3-points seldom affects insurance premia by any appreciable amount. This does of course depend on how many the driver currently has! Do some online comparison checks and see what comes back? That said, whatever it does come back with is what it will be (bar letting the RK cop for it!)

The obligation under s. 172 RTA 1988 to name the driver is personal, but the performance need not be (unless the addressee was the driver). When the police state that the form must not be passed to the driver, they are variously pointing out that if the driver then decides to ignore the form it is the addressee that commits the s. 172 offence, and engaging in their favourite hobby of making up imaginary rules/laws.

There is no reason why the OP cannot respond on behalf of the RK, with the RK's permission, naming himself as the driver.

The only issue is that the OP must understand that doing so does not negate his own obligation to name the driver when he subsequently receives a notice in his won name.
