Received in the post 'a notice of intended prosecution' to identify the driver, from West Yorkshire Police but the dates seem a little odd. Offence was a year ago (8.3.23) but they're only writing to me now (12.3.24). I can't remember who was driving that car a year ago.
It doesn't state the offence either. There are 5 options but they haven't circled/crossed out any, so I don't know what the offence was for. I assume speeding, as there hasn't ever been any interactions/accidents with any other party/police. I have 28 days to reply from date of letter.
I have attached the letter.
What should I do?

How many drivers of the vehicle were there last year - if only one, and if that was you, and if the vehicle was even used on that date (8.3.23) (which you may or may not know), I would ignore the Friday (after all it is not your job to check what day the 8th March 23 was) and simply respond with the requested information and see what happens next.

I would suggest that, if we assume that any incident occurred on March 8th this year, if the OP responded by post tomorrow, the police would struggle to re-issue a corrected NIP and serve it within 14 days of the date of the incident.

Dear Sir,

I received a 'Notice of intended prosecution' dated 12th March 2024, some 12 months after an alleged offence on 8th March 2023.

Due to a number of anomalies; namely the incorrect address for yourselves, the fact that the offence is not highlighted and your correspondence was received in a rather dishevelled envelope, which was handwritten on sticky labels, I am wondering if this is some sort of 'scam' to obtain my details?

I have no idea what this offence relates to, as none of the 5 options (a - e) were highlighted.
In addition to this, it is hard to determine who was driving the vehicle because of the length of time that has passed since the incident. Therefore it is unclear as to which section of your enclosed form you wish me to sign.

Your correspondence also states that; 'the law requires that such notice will be sent within 14 days of the incident'. This is very confusing, as the offence was over 12 months ago.

Please could you let me know in a timely manner which part of the form you wish me to sign and how you wish to proceed with this matter.

In writing to you I have also amended the Postal Code of the address that you supplied on your correspondence (I have enclosed). It actually stated BB4 9PH, which I believe to be incorrect. I have re-addressed it to your Dudley Hill Centre, Postal Code: BD4 9PH.

Within a few days of sending this letter, I received a card (which I have attached), hand delivered to our address. We were not in or in the back garden when the police visited and the card was posted through our door.
I'm wondering what offence has been committed that warrants a police visit to our address? I am debating whether or not to contact them, as I would have thought the proper process should be followed up in writing?
I am genuinely surprised and bemused and wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience.
I was listening on the radio just yesterday about a debate about Police failing to attend burglaries and the like; So why is this so important to them, or is it? Or they would have prosecuted?
Yes, I know there is only one way to find out and that is to contact them but I just thought this would be of interest to some of you.

I can't see what harm it can do to contact the officer and ask what this is regarding?

As NewJudge points out the S172 offence might still be in play if you didn't respond to that request - which as I said you should do now even if it is past the 28 days.
