Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some insights regarding the calibration of Redflex HADECS3X speed cameras, specifically whether anyone has experience or knowledge about the calibration process for these models.

I’ve come across a calibration certificate that states the camera was calibrated in Australia, but I’m wondering if anyone else has noticed that the system may have been shipped to the UK without being recalibrated locally after installation.

It seems like there could be a potential issue where the cameras are calibrated in Australia and then simply installed in the UK without being checked or recalibrated for the specific UK conditions. Does anyone know if this is standard practice, or if there are any concerns about the system’s accuracy as a result?

Any experiences, insights, or information would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Beaniecheese

Is this a live case, or just idle musings?

Why do you want to know? What effect do you think calibration has?
I am not qualified to give legal advice in the UK. While I will do my best to help you, you should not rely on my advice as if it was given by a lawyer qualified in the UK.

This is a live case as I've been issued a NIP for doing 79 in a 70. I've looked at the calibration records, and they are done in AU! I would have assumed that they would have been recalibrated after being shipped halfway around the world and then installed.

A device having no valid calibration certificate at all would not, by itself, be fatal to a speeding prosecution.

The device is assumed to be working correctly unless the contrary can be proved. If you defend the charge on the basis that the device could not be relied upon to measure your speed accurately enough to show you were exceeding he speed limit. the issue you are raising might help you, but I would suggest it would be insufficient to cast enough doubt in court.

Being convicted following a trial will see you liable for prosecution costs of at least £650. You would almost certainly need to enlist expert testimony to make your case in court. If the police decide to do the same to counter your argument those costs will increase considerably.

However you decide o deal with the allegation you must respond to the request for driver’s details within the time allowed.

If you were doing 80mph and have been caught and are now looking for a potential defence then it's likely to be an (expensive) hiding to nothing if you go to trial.

...or you were complying with the limit and have been accused of 79mph then perhaps some effort should be given.

I suspect the former (a natural response) but if the latter then thousands of drivers would be caught which would create a backlash.

I think I've found the document you refer to (M42?) - if so, I'm not convinced it states it was calibrated in Australia.  It states the system was calibrated by the (Australian) company - for all we know they flew out to do it.

Notwithstanding, the secondary check should corroborate any primary reading if necessary.

Redflex might be an Australian company, but installs and calibration are handled by Redflex in Southampton.
