3rd time caught speeding in less than a year
« on: »
in a 20mph zone, I can't tell from the images if I am speeding as they are stills. Is there any defence? I had a speed limiter fitted after the second time but it doesn't always work. This will now be 6 points. After years of not having any, it is down to the new 20mph limits on major roads which give the illusion you are going slower than you actually are. This one was 24mph - I don't drive fast or dangerously, so having this happen 3 times is most frustrating and worrying as I need my car for work. ANy help would be much appreciated!

I've removed the Google Drive link until the OP has redacted their personal details.

... I had a speed limiter fitted after the second time but it doesn't always work...

The following is a trite answer but it isn't any less true for that.

Your speed limiter should be what you do with your right foot depending on what you observe with your eyes.

If you rely on any other kind of "speed limiter" you run a very real risk of getting caught again and again and getting more and more points...

You don't seem to have much by way of a defence. I take it that since you have already committed two offences but have only three points that you have done a speed awareness course recently?

Yes I did a course in January. I am finding the 20 mph on a major road very hard to stick to and I really don't know what to do about it. No doubt someone will say go slower but when you are on a major road such as the A23 or A205 and there is no other traffic around it is very easy to let the speed creep up. I always do about 15mph on minor and residential roads. I am not a fast driver its just these new limits!

Use a manual speed limiter then and set it to 20 when you get onto such a road.

Automatic limiters are OK as assistance, not so much to rely on as they are far to error prone.  That's not the fault of the car manufacturer but the countrywide databases.  We have three different makes (not brands, makes) of car in the family and they all have the same errors in the same places.
There are motorists who have been scammed and those who are yet to be scammed!

I only use the manual speed limiter (when needed) and disabled the automatic version after the onboard camera detected a 30 mph sign on a side road and applied the brakes aggressively when I was going a perfectly legal 60 mph. It gave me the fright of my life (not to mention the poor chap following me at the time who managed to brake and avoid me).

Adding to this I had Waze on and can prove it. Waze always gives you an alert when approaching a speed camera so I’m wondering whether this recorded speed is accurate- how can I find out?

The images may have a time stamp on them, there may be markings on the road which you can measure off Google maps, and therefore calculate roughly the speed of the car. Whether this would convince the bench is another matter!

2nd gear for 20mph helps keep the speed down...

Thanks - I do stay in 2nd gear! My journey started at 11.23 and I was clocked speeding at 11.35. I went through 3 sets of traffic lights

Have you tried posting scans of the NIP in google drive, mentioning stills but not sharing them and asking posters to "kindly do the needful"?
I am responsible for the accuracy of the information I post, not your ability to comprehend it.
