Air line charges for not checking in online
« on: »
Hi all
Can I claim back the money charged by budget airline for not checking in online

I tried to check in online but they wanted me to pay for a seat and i skipped as i didn’t want to pay to select a seat , so it showed i couldn’t check in online until 3hrs before departure
I arrived at the airport about 7am and the flight departure was 9:55am

When I went to the desk to check in I was charged £44 and they said because the check in desk was now open i couldn’t check in online anymore.
I am not sure if to mention the name of the airline
It was from Luton to Larnaca in Cyprus

What does your contract with the airline say about that?
I am not qualified to give legal advice in the UK. While I will do my best to help you, you should not rely on my advice as if it was given by a lawyer qualified in the UK.

I booked through booking.com who sent me an email to check in online
Via the airline website
So i didn’t have any contract directly with the airline
But i couldn’t check in without selecting a seat and a charge for it
Which i didn’t do

What does your contract with booking.com say about it?

Aside from the terms of whatever contract(s) you entered into regarding the flight, the missing piece of the story seems to be the timings. You mentioned that if you are not purchasing a reserved seat, online check-in opens 3 hours before departure. You then mention that you arrived at the airport 2 hours 55 mins before your flight and went to the desk to check in - did you make any attempt to check-in online within 3 hours of the departure, or did you just go straight to the desk?

(I can't see any particular peril in telling us which airline is involved)

I went straight to the desk to check in but when they told me to pay £44 for not checking in online
I asked if I can still check in online while standing there in the airport they said no, because the check in desk is now open
Which i didn’t really understand what that has to do with checking in online

Where can I find my contract with booking.com

Where can I find my contract with booking.com
It would probably have been made available at some point during the booking process, and/or in any subsequent communications from booking.com and/or any other involved party.

I've just run a dummy search on booking.com and at the point I was asked to make payment I was presented with a number of terms & conditions that I would be agreeing to:

The airline sent this email about check in

“It’s almost time to fly! Make sure to check in through the airline’s website to avoid extra charges at the airport.
View your check-in information to find your booking reference and other information you’ll need.”

It's not entirely clear how the term you have shared is relevant to the situation you are seeking advice on.

I shared what I could find in their terms and conditions
Because i couldn’t find any contract with them

It is likely to be difficult to offer much advice unless/until you can find copies of the contract(s) you entered into, either with the airline or any intermediary such as booking.com

I've never used booking.com to book flights, but whenever I have booked flights, the confirmation email(s) I have received have provided the terms and conditions, either directly or via a link.

I've booked numerous  flights with Ryanair, easyjet and BA.
I've never been asked to book a seat when checking in.
it seems odd as when you book the flight you either do or do not book a seat. ???

When you select the. Seat is at online check in not when booking,
Most of the time if i don’t check in online when I get to the airport they check me in and give me a boarding pass
But on this occasion I was asked to pay for checking and boarding pass at the airport desk with Wizz air
Which I found very strange

I have found the summary of the terms and conditions which booking.com sent by email but i can’t see anything about payment for check in at the airport
But the email they sent me for check in said “check is now open, and if you don’t check in online you maybe charged

I did a google search and a lot of people have experienced the same airport charges by Wizz air

Google search says online check in is open 24hrs to 3hrs before departure
