@chippyshell

You reckon the officer who pinged you was c.190m from the 30mph sign, and he says he wasn't sure if you were within the 30mph limit when he nabbed you - yeah?

Have you not seen any photos which should tell you how far away you were when your speed was measured?

Yeh i think it could be case. I have no photos or anything to show far away i was when the speed was measured. He did show me when i was stopped but at the time you don't really think about that.

I suspect it's a repeater?

It isn't a repeater. On the reverse side of that sign is an NSL roundel, signifying that the 30mph limit begins there.
Yeah, so it is...  That's really poorly signed.

If GSV is correct then it's not a restricted road and there's no 30mph repeaters.

Approaching from the other direction does have twin terminal 30mph signs.

If the single 30mph was covered in foliage as well then there could be an argument about the signage.

If you look at the previous years, dont know if this has any substance but it has twin terminal signs for 40mph, one has been removed or not replaced when 30mph was implemented

I have to say that from the current GSV image (June '25) that sign is scarcely visible until you are almost on it. A second sign on the opposite side of the road (where there is no foliage) would be recommended, I would think. Unless the foliage had been cut back in the summer, it must have worsened by now. But the issue is what was its condition in April?

I take it that you have ruled out a defence on the unreliability of the device (because of he distance)?

This seems a bit strange:

...the officer even said when he stopped me that he has to assume that i would have been speeding because it wasn't clear if i was in the 30 or not.

That seems to suggest he was not sure whether you had committed an offence or not. Is that really what he said?

Yes i have ruled that out as a defense, i think originally i was trying to work out if where he was parked was 185 meters away, so if he has seen X speed at that distance was i at sign or before? ie in the NSL. It doesn't specifically say like how far i was.

Yes that is what he said, his statement is abit iffy it just says "the sign was 185 meters away from the enforcement site, so i was confident the car was within the 30mph zone" this is where my whole distance thing came from.

Historically on this road there has been a sign on both sides. It used to be a 40 but im guessing they remove the sign on the right when the speed changed?
I suspect it's a repeater?  If it was a terminal sign then both should be there.

Can you post the exact location?  (Station Road is too generic)

This isn't a restricted road neither.

@chippyshell  -  and where have you got the only being accurate up to 185m from?

Yeh to be honest after checking on the .gov website its irrelevant about the distance. I was told wrong information.

The sign is also hardly visible - This is from June 2025, my ticket is from April 2025

The device that was used guarantees accuracy for legal evidence is usually 185 meters.

What device was it?

Is your argument twofold:

1. That the measurement was taken too far from the device to be reliable.

2. That you may not have passed the 30mph sign when the measurement was taken?

How did you obtain the measurements on your photo?

The device was - LTI 20/20 truspeed

1. Yeh from his standing point to the 30mph sign is over 185meters.

2. Yeh i don't believe i had passed the sign when the measurement was taken

The measurements were just taken using google maps.

Hi,

I received a SJP today in the post but to give some context the road goes from 60 to 30, the officer stated in his statement the sign for 30mph was 185 meters from the enforcement sight, the officer even said when he stopped me that he has to assume that i would have been speeding because it wasn't clear if i was in the 30 or not.

Nothing is mentioned how far away i was when the the speed was clocked and the officers location was actually further than 185meters from the sign, more like 200meters. The device that was used guarantees accuracy for legal evidence is usually 185 meters. Beyond that, the readings are not officially certified, even if the device might still work.

Another thing to note, they provided when the calibration and alignment was done but it only seems to be <50meters

My question is, is it worth me pleading not guilty in court and do you think i have valid arguments? I guess another to add, is the 30mph sign is only on 1 side of the road and just after a bend. It isn't very clear at all.
