Civil penalty charge notices (Councils, TFL and so on) / Redbridge, code 38L, failing to comply with sign, Overton Drive Wanstead

Hi,
Looks like I picked up a pcn the other day for Failing to comply with a sign indicating that vehicular traffic must pass to the specified side of the sign (camera enforcement)
I'm assuming I'll have to pay this, my only defence really is that there were no signs that there were cameras or any obvious cameras that I could see and no previous warning that this was coming up, it's not a road layout I'm used to so when confronted with the metal posts it didn't look like I'd fit (I'm 2,249m although I think that does include the mirrors) with no easy place to turn round I just swung round the sign the other side as it was a Sunday morning and nothing was about.
I guess that was the wrong thing to do!
Any options here or do I just pay up and do a three point turn next time?
