Hi everyone,

I need some advice regarding two parking fines I recently paid, even though I believe I shouldn’t have been liable for them. Here’s the situation:

  • I moved into my rental flat two years ago, and my letting agent (Bridges) told me where to park. I followed their instructions and parked there without issues.
  • A few weeks ago, I received two parking fines for parking in this spot, which later escalated to debt collection notices (£170 each, total £340).
  • I contacted Bridges, and they initially confirmed that my parking spot was correct and said they would check with the management company.
  • I displayed a note on my car stating that the management was aware of the situation and that I was allowed to park there.
  • After multiple follow-ups, Bridges now admits they were given incorrect information by the management company and have just provided me with the actual correct parking space.
  • They suggested I pay the fines while they “work to resolve” the issue, but they are not guaranteeing reimbursement.

I have now paid the £340 to limit my liability, but I feel I should be able to recover this amount since I parked exactly where my letting agent told me to.

My Questions
  • Can I hold Bridges or the management company legally responsible for these fines?
  • Do I have grounds to claim reimbursement, and what legal steps can I take to recover my money?
  • Would this fall under misrepresentation or negligence by the letting agent?
  • Should I escalate this further (e.g., small claims court, property ombudsman, etc.)?

I have email proof that Bridges originally told me to park in the wrong spot and later admitted their mistake. Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.
