The Flame Pit / M6 staffordshire?
« on: November 26, 2025, 06:41:18 pm »
Anyone know what was a'happening on the M6 southbound (and possibly northbound) in Staffordshire earlier today?

A totally unnecessary 50mph speed limit was being enforced from J15 to J13, with the approaching signs saying...

If "smart" motorways can so easily be disabled, then maybe they should be cancelled, and nice, safe, hard shoulders reinstated!

Similar 50mph speed limits were being enforced on (last) Sunday morning, on nearly empty motorways, after "smart motorway upgrades" were supposed to have taken place.

...so the administration of this scheme will cost an absolute fortune, will make naff all difference to the air quality (oops, congestion) but they will make gazzilions out of the fines.

Sounds like Oxford is turning into Khan's London :(

The situation you describe would be ludicrous if done deliberately. If a lower limit is required in lanes 1,2 and 4, why on earth would it be deemed OK to travel faster in lane 3?

I have experienced such a "ludicrous" situation on the M42 Northbound just before the M6 (a year and a half ago).

The overhead gantries said, from the left, 60mph, 50mph and 40mph!

This is whilst the roadworks (physical) signs below all said 50mph!!!

I immediately reported this to National Highways (or whatever they are called these days) and spoke to Mark who didn't know about the lower roadworks limit and couldn't understand why the limits were different across the three lanes.

This is worrying because you can literally lose your licence based on badly or incorrectly enforced speed limits!

From what I can gather it seems it is only available to those with a central government e-mail address (e.g. ".gov.uk", ".police.uk" ".nhs.uk"):

That link is probably for government departments (or agencies?) who are being "invited" to use OneLogin to authenticate users. Thus the "Ministry of Dog Fouling" can force you to login should you wish to report and upload a photo of illegal puppy poo.

That way, at a future date, the "Ministry of Citizen Compliance" can be sure that they are issuing the correct person (curtain twitcher) with their appropriate social credits, and the "Ministry of Photograph Tracking" have the serial number of your camera, should you be caught recording things that are not approved by the then government!

Oh, and a OneLogin account is now a LEGAL REQUIREMENT for company directors in the UK (see https://www.gov.uk/guidance/verifying-your-identity-for-companies-house)! I don't remember the BBC giving that news much publicity?

I too have a Government Gateway account, which i was forced (over five years ago) to create to determine whether and when i would qualify for my state pension. As part of that, i was forced to hand over my mobile phone number, so even then they were trying to slurp as much information as they could about me (even though they already had my NI number).

This creeping centralised computerisation is not for our benefit, and has been slowly going on for years (regardless of the government who are supposedly in power) :(

This sounds suspiciously like the OneLogin "service" that is the government's "nudge" to get you to register for Digital ID (BritCard).

If you are comfortable with this then "fill yer boots", but if you are a bit sceptical then consider using the old fashioned (albeit slower) ways to bow down to our lords and masters ;)

The council declared a road safety emergency last year.

I doubt A&E are concerned with the road type but probably get info on nature of accident such as speeds. There are stats on incidents by road collected by the police of course.

So where is the evidence of your claim that "Birmingham drivers are among the worst and the city has lagged badly in traffic calming."?

Well we can expect road accidents and deaths to plummet in Birmingham, as they are reducing nearly all 40mph limits down to 30mph.

I never knew about this until earlier today when it turns out that Chester Road North has been dropped to a thirty by simply removing the 40mph signs at the Queslett Road roundabout, and also disappearing the 40mph repeaters.

Some info here

Useful maps are at Be Heard

You would have thought that such an important change would have involved massive publicity and vehicle activated signs and all kinds of roadside warning, but i must have missed all that :(

No reply from @Boomer, but here is The Ribble Valley (Off-Street Parking Places) Order 2020.

cp8759, i think that you mean @Hk, but the linked order was quite interesting anyway.

Funnily enough, i have just spend the last few days in Clitheroe - but for the Food Festival rather than immersing myself in the parking experience ;)

How did you pay? There is a large information board right next to the payment machine, which (at least according to the Google Earth picture) says that "A penalty charge may be issued in the following circumstances"...

"5. Parking in a disabled bay without displaying a valid disabled badge"

The sign (contract) says that to park (for free) you "must enter your vehicle registration using the terminal in store". No mention of receipts, or how you qualify as a "customer".
If they prevent you from entering your vehicle registration because you don't have a receipt, isn't that frustration of contract or something?

OP, the Parking Charge Number and Vehicle Registration number are both visible on your image uploads (see the black background "How to Pay" sections).

Best edit those n'all!

I received an initial letter saying I could pay £200 fine and take 6 points unless I had 6 or more points. A month or so late in August 2023 I got a follow up letter with the same offer saying that I had not responded to the first letter.

Did you reply to the "initial letter"
Did you reply to the "follow up letter"
Have you replied to ANY letter?
Can we see the text of your replies (if any)?

You really are making it difficult for us to understand the exact position that you are in!
