Hello all,

First-time poster, been driving in London for about 10 years, and this is my first 50r contravention ticket, I will admit I didn't see the sign, but one could heavily argue, that there was inappropriate signage - one sign on a busy road where buses can easily restrict the view.

I was driving to an open day at Queen Mary University and I knew where to park, as I was driving, I saw the chance to enter the road I needed to park on, It's pouring, and as I waited to turn right, just before the junction, I do not see any signage that says I wouldn't be able to turn in, but there was indeed ONE sign, but a few meters back being obstructed by buses constantly traveling down the bus lane. I know university is expensive but I did not expect to be paying for it so soon...

My argument is that if there was extra signage in conjunction with the single No right turn sign, the contravention would have been easily avoided.

Here is an image of the signage, the yellow circle is where I stopped to wait to turn in, there is no second chance to rectify your mistake, It's almost as if where intention to turn right is enough to get you stung, usually you would see another sign or wording to warn you but nothing at all.

The actual sign is on the right side of the image.

You can see even the buses can obstruct the sign.

apologies if anything is incorrect with the post, please advise and I will try to fix it as soon as possible.

I'm not sure if I should post the PCN number and reg plate, but if it helps, I am happy to respond with the details.

Well, actually there are two signs, one each side of the carriageway, (or there were in July 2022 when the GSV camera van came along) : -

So not as strong a case as you think it is.

I've won here before, ages ago, in the case of Mohammed Khan v Transport for London (2220369682, 1 March 2022).

One of the key points is that the traffic order for this restriction was made by Tower Hamlets, though it is possible they might have made a new one so I will check.

@MMAP1 for now please call TFL on 0343 222 3333 and ask for the video, they will send you a DVD in the post and put the penalty on hold while you wait.
I practice law in the Traffic Penalty Tribunal, London Tribunals, the First-tier tribunal for Scotland, and the Traffic Penalty Tribunal for Northern Ireland, but I am not a solicitor or a barrister. Notwithstanding this, I voluntarily apply the cab rank rule. I am a member of the Society of Professional McKenzie Friends, my membership number is FM193 and I abide by the SPMF service standards.

Hey,

Thanks a bunch for the responses, just finished work and will try to call today or on my lunch break tomorrow for the video.

I will have a look at the case, I am yet to start an appeal so I will do.

I think the case is reasonable, but I guess we will have to see.

Thanks again for the help.

Edit: I have called - DVD requested - +14 days allowance to 11th July.

If you don't get the video by the date stated, let us know and we'll draft a representation for you based on what we know so far. The biggest risk in TFL cases is that people order the DVD and when it doesn't turn people chase TFL for the DVD but they never make a representation and then end up with a charge certificate; so we must make sure that doesn't happen.

Hey,

sorry for the late response, I had the CD arrive but one of my nephews got their hands on it while I had it on the table and off for work...

I did call back to ask if they can re-send it but I have been waiting too long so I will call back today.

I appreciate your dedication to help, thanks a bunch.

Dispatched 16/07/24 should be arriving on 18/07/24

The disc has arrived, and the file is in a .mkv format which my Macbook doesn't read.

Currently, I am using an apple superdrive to read the disc.

I am happy to take any advice on how to view the actual footage.

Please see the footage below - I downloaded a VLC Player and it was fine.

Edit: VLC Player and Link added

As long as you make a representation while the discount is still on offer, any rejection will reoffer the discount again. So I suggest you put in a representation simply denying the contravention, with a bit of luck they'll mess up the notice of rejection (their current notice of rejection template is flawed).

Send a representation via https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/challenge-a-pcn and take a screenshot of the confirmation page.

Appeal Submitted.

Hoping for the best I guess...

Maybe they do have me dead to rights here but man, I’ve never been hit with a no right turn ever.

I cannot post a photo attachment but here are the details;

Thanks for the help so far, even getting it delayed is a bonus so I can save some cash to pay it off.
