TFL – 46: Red Route / Upper Street, Islington
« on: »
I think this one should be reasonably easy – unless there's a red route rule that I missed? 🤔

I was parked on a red route on Upper Street, London N1. The ticket puts my car there at 17:50 (correct), with a very blurry image.

However, convinced it was a mistake I went back and took a photo, and the sign says "No Stopping Mon-Sat 7pm to 4pm".

I am actually a Blue Badge Holder, but I think that part is irrelevant in this case. 🤔

Front page of the ticket:

Their blurry photo of the sign:

Clear photo of sign, taken when I went back to check:

Apart from querying the signage (which is possibly their mistake), is there anything else I should challenge?

We really do need to see what the carriageway markings because there are two adjacent bays here with different restrictions. Latest GSV view is September 2025. You will see that it has no sign outside the pub, so some changes seem to have been made. Quite possibly these have yet to be communicated to the CCTV viewing staff.

This 2024 view shows a sign outside the pub with restricted hours 7am to 7pm, with loading-only 7am to 4pm.

This 2025 view shows no sign at all for this bay

Note the bay boundary at the phone box (==== line)

Looks like somebody has boobed on the bay signs.

The other segments give the full time cutoff as 7pm ‐ one of them gives 3 hours for Blue Badge holders up to 7pm and another for Blue Badge holders up to 4pm.

This is the only one that gives 4pm for all users – which seems to suggest a mistake by the sign installer.

I won't be able to take any more photos for a while.

Actually I did have one other photo of the markings relevant to the bay – just not showing the ending clearly (roughly where the motorbike is).

The bay goes back behind the photograph, and if there is no sign at its start, then this can be the only sign for the bay, and your PCN is void. The pole for the sign was there in 2024 with a sign for 7am to 7pm.

But the sign has disappeared in 2025, but the location is clearly still there, with a bit of tarmac filling the hole

If one looks on GSV right back to the earliest view of 2018, that sign is always there with the 7am to 7pm times.

Also there has only ever been that one sign too.

Absent in September 2025, but now there, from when we know not, but now with times 7am to 4pm. There can be no clearer evidence that the PCN is void. I would take them all the way to London Tribunals if it were me.

That is the only sign in this bay, and it does have clear markings at each end. I was just curious whether there was anything I had missed, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I'll draft out a simple challenge because – unless they do something dishonest, like change the sign and accuse me of forgery – it's just obviously their mistake.

Thank you all.

No need to write a lot; just say the sign for the bay restricts stopping 7am to 4pm, therefore your PCN is void as it is outside the restricted times. Include a photo of the sign. Post up their response when you get it.
