Hi, I received a penalty charge notice from Croydon council a few days ago (18th June 2025) for going in a restricted area of Croydon (permit holders only) on my way home.

It just so happened that waze took me a different way home this way. Can honestly say I did not see the sign at all, it was dark and after looking on street view the warning sign is literally straight after the turn (completely missed it), apparently there is a another sign before on Gardeners road too after some investigation.

I noticed another user on here has also recently received the same penalty notice, however their representation was rejected but it seems they are taking it to tribunal:

I’m looking for advice for what I should do, if there is any way of appealing this? It’s quite a significant amount to pay £80, seems it went up very recently from £65.. great..

Thanks in advance.

This is your problem. Reliance on satnavs in London is fatal because they are never up-to-date. If a satnav takes you down minor streets, then you must be always alert for closed roads, annonced by the "Flying Motorcycle" sign.

However, their photo does not show your car passing a sign, only a sign for the opposite direction. Can you post the GSV view that you looked at, as a link, please.

Yeah I take full responsibility for relying on waze. Definitely will keep an eye out for these from now on.

With the camera angle, is this something that can void a penalty notice? Regarding the signage it does show on both sides. The streetview link should be at the bottom of the first post. It’s here too:

Hi, just bumping one last time. I’m planning to pay it tomorrow, unless there’s any leads on it. Thanks

I've just had a look, and frankly with the two signs so prominent, it does show the problem in London of relying on a satnav and ignoring signs. Did you realise what these signs meant ?

It does seem pretty cut, frankly I didn’t see it somehow. It was in the middle of a residential area so wasn’t something I was expecting. But thought I would search online and found the other post on here and lots of complaints.

The side road that leads you into this zone does have a warning sign too, but it’s all within 10-15 seconds but still would be considered sufficient warning I suppose unfortunately
