BUS GATE KING ST JNC QUEBEC ST LEEDS 34J

Hi all,


I’m hoping you can help.


I was leaving the car park I use in Leeds city centre and, due to the roadworks, had to follow a diversion which took me against the normal traffic flow on Swinegate.

I believe I followed all of the yellow diversion signs correctly, which took me past the station, but I cannot be 100% certain as I was driving on roads in the city centre that I would normally avoid for this exact reason.

Today, I received this PCN. The video clearly shows me driving through a bus gate, which I accept, but I genuinely believe I was following the diversion route.

Am I able to challenge this, or do I simply have to pay? I’m also sharing this in case anyone else has found themselves in the same situation.

You always have the option to submit what would be formal representations against the PCN, the main problem being that councils game the system ruthlessly to get the money in.

It's difficult to give advice on your case because you've given no details of this diversion. Was it signed throughout in the correct way, with signs at the junctions ?

Thank you, and apologies for not giving those details. There were signs along the diversion from what I recall but it is setup every evening and is taken away every morning so there’s no guarantee it’s the exactly same one day from the next. Equally, I may have just made a mistake.

This is the diversion route I took - marked in purple, and the red circle is the bus gate/camera.

Feels a bit harsh when there’s a load of roadworks and the redirection forces drivers the wrong way down roads etc.

It is more than possible that the people organising the diversion have had no contact with the traffic enforcement department. So I suggest you submit reps stating that you followed the diversion signs, therefore you request that the PCN be cancelled as it is surely unlawful to divert traffic through a bus gate and to then penalise that traffic with PCNs.

Include the map you show here and request that if you made a mistake, that they show the route you should have taken.
