Cashless,,,tis the future Rodders.
« on: August 14, 2023, 06:09:15 pm »
Son just got back from the '2023 We Out Here Festival', apparently is was advertised as a totally cashless event  :D  :D  :D it was also apparent that the organisers hadn't checked the signal strength  :D  :D  :D  ergo buying stuff was a nightmare as none of the 'tills' would work  :D  :D  :D ....oh the sweet joy of being born in the 60's lol.

Most of Manchester’s boozers are now cashless, it works in the landlords favour if you don’t see actual cash leaving your pocket you don’t get that sense what a waste of money so just tap tap away with your card.

I have seen similar scenarios at various country fairs and the like with vendors relying on (a non-existent) cellular service.  This is why some of the organisers of these events offer a wifi service at £!!!!

As an example "The Game Fair" at Ragley Hall this year was a 3-day event and the wi-fi cost £124 for the event.  You would have to sell a fair few ice-creams to cover that cost, but I expect that it pales into insignificance compared to the cost of the pitch itself

It also prevents the staff pocketing the change.

But not management pocketing tips that may be added to the card payment.
Which was something my daughter had a regular argument about when she was working in a bistro bar and bills of a couple of hundred with 10-15-20 quid tips were common.

Is this really true?

I'll be giving Manchester a wide berth "forever" now - i can't beleive that Northerners are so stupid :(

I was actually born quite a few miles north of Madchester(sp) ;), but seriously, are their town (city) centre pubs really cashless?

Sounds like we need to move the "Watford Gap" dividing line to the M62 or even further!!!

I was attending Minshull Street Court (as a cps witness lol) for two weeks last summer and all the big popular pubs/bars eateries in the centre were cashless.

The terminals can almost certainly be set up to work "offline", so maybe just poor planning on behalf of the organisers / retailers.

easyJet took €3 from my Google Pay at 40,000ft so if they can, everyone should be able to!

Some of them can. It depends on the device, and whether the service provider for the card machine allows it I believe (so some of the cheaper ones used by smaller businesses etc. might not work offline).

The main downside of using one offline though is that the transaction isn't actually processed whilst the machine is offline. It is stored and processed once the device is back online. The clear downside here is that if a customer's card is declined for whatever reason, the merchant will only discover this when the customer is already long-gone.

At least one flight I took this year with either Ryanair or EasyJet had in-flight WiFi - it could only be used to access the in-flight duty free menu and some advertising for the airline/destination, but nevertheless suggests they have internet access which could presumably be used for processing card transactions (these use very little bandwidth). If not, and they're using them offline, the risk of a card declining post-landing is presumably reduced by the fact that they can record which seat numbers order what, and then chase up any customers whose payment doesn't go through.

Most don’t process in real time, which is why many airlines won’t allow payment with pre-pay cards etc.

Was on a GWR train from Bristol to Paddington recently, apparently the card machines were down so they had to shut the refreshments service. I wonder how much that cost them.

Frankly I'm coming round to the view that Parliament should simply legislate to mandate that anyone accepting payment at an in-person transaction must accept cash in a manner that is no less advantageous than other payment methods that are accepted (i.e. at no additional cost to the customer). After all, Visa and Mastercard mandate through terms and conditions that card payments must be no less advantageous than any other payment method offered, so there's no reason why the Crown shouldn't do the same through force of law.
