Car purchased from a dealer. Is a SORN needed?

I have purchased a used car from a dealer.


They taxed it and delivered it to my house since I have no insurance cover for it.


The car is now currently in my garage for the next week or so till I get rid of my current car which is fully taxed, insured, Moted etc.


My question is this, with it in my garage obviously off the public road currently taxed but not insured, must it be SORNed as
well or can I legally leave it as it is, currently taxed and not insured?


Once the current car is off my hands the insurance will be transfered to the car in my garage and it can then be used straight away.


Yes, I know I cannot use the new-to-me car on the public roads without insurance and I am my own insurer for the risk of fire theft etc. when it is sitting in my locked garage.


I thought it would be easy to check this on the GOV.UK site but it was not clear on this point.


Your advice would be appreciated.

My understanding is that if a car is taxed, it must also be insured regardless of where it located. This is known as Continuous Insurance. If the vehicle is declared as SORN then no insurance would be needed.

If the car is in your name in must be taxed by you or SORNed. Tax is not transferable.

Technically correct, but only insofar as if it is taxed it is not SORN.
If it is registered and not SORN it must be taxed and insured

I suspect that the OP knows the answer, but was simply fishing for some kind of loophole.

Thanks for making this clear.

With previous purchases the dealer delivered the new-to-me car on trade plates and I Sorned it straight away. This dealer insisted on taxing it before delivery despite me requesting otherwise, which threw me a bit.

I will get Sorning.

SORN is the cheaper option. I find it odd the dealer has paid out for tax on a car he's selling just to deliver it. But that's not your problem.
