SORN/Untaxed Vehicle fine DVLA
« on: »
Hi all,

I received an untaxed vehicle fine from DVLA for not reporting my vehicle as SORN, even though I reported the vehicle as SORN a few days before I received the fine.

I got in touch with DVLA who confirmed that the fine was issued on the same day that I reported my vehicle as SORN (19th October), so they are saying I must pay the fine.

Is there any way I could appeal this?

I also asked about how many days we have to report as SORN or tax the vehicle after buying it, and they said 2 weeks. However, I cannot find this information anywhere online. What I managed to find was that the period was undefined.

The annoying thing is that this is an enduro motorbike which I've taken abroad, so I don't even use it on UK roads!

Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers

When did you buy it?

The DVLA lie. This is an offer of an out of court settlement. If you do not pay it, you will be prosecuted for the offence.
If you want to avoid being prosecuted, you must do what they say. However, there is no overarching obligation to accept their offer of a settlement.

The fact that you declared it SORN before you received the settlement offer is irrelevant to whether you committed the offence by failing to declare it SORN or tax it prior to that date.
I am responsible for the accuracy of the information I post, not your ability to comprehend it.

So, untaxed for over a month. Guilty as alleged. The out-of-court offer is as good as it will get.
