NIP for Not reporting an accident
« on: »
Please help, anyone can advise here.
On 23 June 2026, my husband was driving his Taxi, no one else was travelling with him. A car hit his taxi on the passenger side door at the round about, the vehicle received a dent and paint of the other car. There was no passenger traveling in it. The driver of the other car which hit his vehicle ran away, he didn't stop at all. My husband stopped there at the round about and took pictures of the damage to his vehicle.
.
However, as our cousin has a garage to fix cars. He didn’t report to his insurance as the repair can be done by our selves.
.
Today he has received this NIP. What should he do now the time on the NIP is wrong, it is half an hour earlier. He was not on the accident site at the time.
It says:
1. Failing to report an accident contrary to sec 170(4)
2. Failing to stop and give names and address contrary to sec 170(4)
3. Driving without due care and attention contrary to sec 3 Road traffic 1988 Act.

There is also a form sent to fill in the details of the driver.

Please advise what should he do regarding NIP.
Should he call insurance, he is worried he is late?
He was not driving carelessly at all.
Would his insurance be void?
He was silly he didn’t inform at the time.

At the moment he is required to name the driver under S172, so he must do that and then wait to see what the police do next. They may just leave it to the insurers to sort out, so he should inform his insurer.

As driver details were not exchanged at the time, your husband was required to report the accident.

As an accident occurred, no NIP is required, so any inaccuracy in the time is irrelevant.
