26mph in a 20mph – first NIP

Hi, first time I’ve received one of these so just looking for a bit of advice.

I’ve received an NIP from the Met for doing 26mph in a 20mph. It was a police officer at the roadside using a handheld speed gun/mobile camera.

I know I was 6mph over the limit, but before I respond I just wondered if there’s anything on the notice or about the circumstances that I should be checking, or whether it all looks pretty standard?

I did a speed awareness course with Thames Valley Police back in 2022, but nothing since then.

Thanks for any advice.

If you weren't stopped at the time and you're the Registered Keeper then did the notice arrive within 14 days?

In terms of content they issue thousands of them so if there was any generic deficiency then it would be well known.  But assuming the location is correct then you appear to be looking at 3 points and £100.

See https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/rs/road-safety/speeding/if-youve-received-a-speed-camera-activation-letter-or-notice/ which implies you should be offered a driver awareness course.

The police will consider the following grounds when assessing your eligibility for the driver awareness course:

your speed narrowly exceeded the limit and falls within the guidelines set out by the National Police Chief Council (NPCC) up to:
31 mph in a 20 mph area
42 mph in a 30 mph area
53 mph in a 40 mph area
64 mph in a 50 mph area
75 mph in a 60 mph area
86 mph in a 70 mph area
you haven’t already completed a course within three years or are booked on an upcoming course
Unless I've missed something fundamental here.

No. You have saved the OP from unnecessarily having to read the "READ THIS FIRST" sticky at the top of this forum. Gold star.
