The Flame Pit / Re: Car Insurance Extras.
« on: January 27, 2025, 03:38:55 pm »
Do you not have supply of a Courtesy Car as part of your normal policy?

Yes, I have that option on both of our policies.

I have 2 cars, mine & Mrs Coachdriver's, so I will be paying twice to have the benefit of one replacement car when needed.

That assumes that we wll be covered so long as catastrophe does not happen to both cars at the same time.

The separate RAC Motor Legal Protection Policy covers both cars in one stand alone policy and as I mentioned earlier, comes out cheaper than the Insurance company charges for one car.I was hoping that a stand alone replacement car policy might function in the same way.

What a lot of people are falling foul of these days is use for delivering food or parcels. Mine specifically excludes such use.

I always use SDP plus business use to cover both of us carrying business things to and from work.

Fortunately we are not keen on delivering food or parcels.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I had tried searches with other words and no success.

This search brought up insurance companies touting their add on for hire car cover as before but well down the list was a company called Coplus who independently offered a replacement vehicle ranging from cars through to dual controlled cars, vans and 4X4s.  I’ll get a quote from them.

If anyone else has experience with stand alone hire car insurance I would be glad to hear from them.

When you take out car insurance the company offers extra services.

These are typically Breakdown Cover, Motor Legal Protection, Higher Personal Injury Amounts and Replacement Car After An Accident.

Now, I have stand alone Breakdown Car cover at a better rate and wider cover. I also have a separate RAC Motor Legal Protection Policy covering my 2 cars at a lower premium than they charge for one car.

What I am missing is separate cover for the short term supply of a car when my car is stolen, burnt out or damaged in a RTA.

Has anyone heard of this being available separately from the basic car insurance policy?

The Flame Pit / Re: Boarding / Alighting on a Bus Stop

Just as an amusing diversion.

I used to regularly use a bus stop near Birmingham Airport. It was frequently blocked by parked cars unloading airport passengers.

One day I just had enough of it, pulled the coach up close and held the loud air horn on continuously.

Out stepped two fully armed Airport Police Officers, was I embarrassed!

They had a look around stepped back in and drove off, what a relief.

I suppose if this had happened in a more authoritarian country I might have had a spell in hospital.

Non-motoring legal advice / Dog attack in my garden.
« on: July 15, 2024, 07:31:09 pm »
A day or two back I was out in my front garden doing a bit of digging with my trusty fork.

Now, the next door neighbour has 3 pet dogs all small terriers. They are yappy things barking agressively when let out in the enclosed rear garden.

They managed to escape through the front door and headed straight for me. Our front gardens are open plan.

This is the first time the dogs have been loose at the front when I have also been at the front in the year or so they have been there.

I am used to dogs so I just stood still while they headed for me barking, teeth bared in attack mode.

What to do to defend myself while holding my digging fork having four sharpish tines?

My instant decision was that if they applied their teeth to my flesh I would apply the sharpish tines to their flesh with some vigour.

I have a reasonable knowledge of what not to do when out on the highway in my vehicle but where would I stand stabbing these attackers with my fork?

Panic was setting in and the application of my fork could easily result in a very large vets bill.

As it was the adult rushed out and called the dogs off.

So my question is, what should I do when it happens next time and there is no one handy to save me?

Since the consenus of opinion is to start again, that is what I will do.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond.

@Coachdriver sorry to be pedantic but I hope it's a lasting power of attorney? An ordinary one would not work for your purposes.

Sorry about the late reply, I have been doing a coach tour round the London area.

Yes it is a Lasting Power of Attorney, it was completed in 2022 and says Lasting on the documentation.

It's always worth checking on me!

Contacting the Office of the Public Guardian is a good idea if they had a good customer response reputation.

Judging by the time it took to sort out the original Powers of Attorney, getting NHS treatment is speedy.

Thanks for your reply 666, I might just do that. From my very limited experience in this area it looks the best option.

This query is one for a STEP solicitor or someone with direct experience using Powers of Attorney please.

A couple of years ago I set up Powers of Attorney for the wife and myself. Nothing complicated, when we don't have the mental capacity it's over to the 2 children to manage what's left of our health and finance.

I did it myself everything signed and witnessed correctly. After a long wait all 4 came back fully registered and looking fine.

There is a slight wrinkle in one of them however which may or may not be significant.

Each Power of Attorney details 3 attorneys to be appointed. They are listed in Section 2, a sort of introduction/summary of what's to come later in the document. Then in Section 11 each attorney has signed and been witnessed doing so as required.

Now here's a thing. In one of the Powers of Attorney in Section 2 there are only 2 attorneys shown. In Section 11 however all 3 are correctly included, signed and witnessed as required.

Does this omission in Section 2 invalidate the Power of Attorney or is it to be treated as a clerical error?

I assumed that since all has been checked, approved and registered by the Office of the Public Guardian then the it is valid.

Having read of the difficulties experienced by others in the position of being an Attorney and having their Power of Attorney questioned, I have become concerned about the same thing happening here.

A second opinion would be appreciated.

Well, would you believe it.

I have received two letters from Parkmaven saying that they have accepted my appeal and have cancelled the two parking charge notices which were outstanding.

As mentioned above I contacted both the Premier Inn and the parking control company Parkmaven asking for these two notices to be lifted.

Of course it would be uncharitable for me to think that the parking control company took this action because they were instructed to do so by the Premier Inn.

Anyway a good outcome.

Sorry about the slight delay in replying. I have been busy eroding the country's infrastructure by using the boss's coach.

The keeper has  contacted the Premier Inn through their complaints system politely requesting that they ask their company that controls parking to withdraw the notices.

The parking control company has been requested to review their data.

I will have a go at masking any identifying info on the two notices and post  them up here. I am not well practised at this sort of thing.

While on holiday the driver spent one night at the Premier Inn at Carlisle.

On arrival the driver entered the vehicle details on the terminal at reception as prompted to by the receptionist.

Parking is free to residents for the duration of their stay.

An hour or so later before going out for a short time that evening, the driver entered again the vehicle details at the same terminal.

The keeper has now received 2 Notice to Keeper parking charge notices relating to that stay for each entry and exit. 2 x £100 reduced to 2 x £60 if paid within 14 days, that is by tomorrow. All documents can be posted here later if required.

The driver is adamant that the correct vehicle registration number was entered and has done this procedure many times before at other locations.

What to do now?

With your agreement, I will post a simple appeal asking for a review of the data held by Parkmaven to stay the £100 payments. I have every confidence that this will be rejected.

Are there better grounds for a proper, more thought out, appeal later?

My next move would be to contact Premier Inn and ask them to have the parking charges withdrawn.

Your advice would be appreciated.
