Thanks for your input.
The cones were in the top bay next to the junction with Kirkgate from which I entered. There is then a gap for the entrance to the park on the left and then the second parking bay area along the rest of the street.
As you have stated had another parking sign near the start which can be seen in Google street view but which I didn't notice at the time.
There were other cars and maybe vans parked in the bays down along the street which may have blocked visibility of that sign, there were also pedestrians crossing the road around the area so I may have been focussing more attention on them.
I guess I could have done more to check the signs, but it's just irritating really when I park there quite a lot and it's on quite a steep hill so I don't like needlessly walking up and down it (I'm not in the best of shape).
