I thought so.

I will pass all your advice onto my friend.

Many thanks

I found out today that the HMRC no longer reimburse you a cheque for paying tax. ... My friend went through this company, as directed by HMRC, ... Surely this is wrong on so many levels.

The only thing wrong is the story your friend gave you; they were NOT directed to Fairsfair by HMRC - I suspect they googled tax rebate and landed on a site that may have looked like the official HMRC site but actually wasn't...

As Fairsfair themselves state in their T&Cs (https://fairsfair.co.uk/tob/): 'You understand and agree that you could pursue a claim for a tax refund from HMRC independently for free, without the use of our Services'

all sound decidedly dodgy to me. my last tax refunds were cheque and a credit into my tax account.

I don't think this is true.

You can claim refunds via the Government website: https://www.gov.uk/tax-overpayments-and-underpayments/if-youre-due-a-refund

Fairsfair are a company who will act as an intermediary and charge for that service. There is no need to use them at all.

No mention of them here: https://www.gov.uk/tax-overpayments-and-underpayments/if-youre-due-a-refund

I am skeptical that HRMC directed anyone to use an intermediary company - is there any evidence of this?

I found out today that the HMRC no longer reimburse you a cheque for paying tax.

They now refer you to a company Fairsfair for claiming your tax rebate. Apparently thins started June 2025.

My friend went through this company, as directed by HMRC, providing his claim of £60.10. The Fairs fair reimbursed him for £31.71.

Surely this is wrong on so many levels.
