In October, like an idiot, I allowed one of my car's insurance to lapse (I did not drive it). I was issued the fine, which I paid within the period allowing it to be £50.
I then failed to notice that this payment got sent back to me several hours later. I don't know why this happened. I also failed to note my original payment reference or take a screenshot of the confirmation (idiotic again).
I have now been sent a Single Justice Procedure Notice and must plead guilty or not guilty to the offence contrary to Section 144A(1).
I understand that I can include mitigating circumstances along with my plea.
Since I accept that I did not have the car insured on the date, I assume that means I must plead guilty (and that doesn't mean I'm pleading guilty to not paying the fine?).
My plan is to plead guilty, and include screenshots of my bank statement, as well as try and get my bank to provide written confirmation that I did make that payment and they returned it, and to hope the case is either dropped or the fine is greatly reduced.
I may also try and the DVLA to provide written confirmation that I made a payment and it was returned to me, though I don't know if that will be feasible to achieve in the 21 day time frame.
I'd really appreciate any advice you might have, thanks.
