Title: Re: 57 in a 50 - NIP from GMP

Yeah seems like I just need to bite the bullet and do the course. Thanks for all the replies.

It was a standard size Transit van, I was under the (incorrect) impression that they were treated like cars in respect to speed limits, looks like I need to brush up on my highway code!

NSL dual and single carriageway, speed limits for goods vehicles are 60 and 50 respectively. NSL motorways, restricted roads and posted limits, same as for cars.

I was driving a standard size van and as far as I am aware the speed limit for those is the same as cars?
Not relevant for this case but it would be worth your while checking this for the future. I'm not sure what you mean by "standard size" but Transits and similar have lower limits than cars.

The long and the short of this is that if you decline the course which will almost certainly be offered, you will be prosecuted in court.

There the police will produce evidence to show that your vehicle's speed was detected using an approved device. They will also be able to show what the prevailing limit was at the time. Your task will be to cast doubt on that evidence and from what you say, all you have to help you is "...but I am sure that I wasn't speeding and was sticking to the displayed speed limits".

It's not too hard to imagine which way the court's decision will go.

In the event you are convicted you will pay a fine of half a week's net income, a surcharge of 40% of that fine and prosecution costs which will be in the region of £650. So no change from £1k for most people.

You could contact National Highways to check the prevailing limit. They should have a log of variable speed limit impositions.

I take it you are the Registered Keeper and that your NIP arrived within 14 days?

I have received an NIP from Greater Manchester Police for doing 57 in a 50mph zone on the motorway. Do you think there is any way of getting out of this? They have a copy of the camera calibration on the online portal, but the images of the van from the camera are so bad quality that I cannot make anything out, including the speed displayed on the motorway gantry.

I have a clean license so would probably get the course, but I am sure that I wasn't speeding and was sticking to the displayed speed limits. I was driving a standard size van and as far as I am aware the speed limit for those is the same as cars?

Also I can't use the 14 day time limit to issue the NIP as it was a hire van and they issued the original NIP to the hire company within the 14 days.
