It came back somewhat earlier than 11:10 this morning I think...
It seems to be back up and running now.
-
Pleased to see PPP is back online this morning, it came back at about 11:10 if anyone's interested.
-
Can you offer an opinion on the (very) marked absence of speeding-related matters on here? I've been ****-canned on PPP so seldom visit but they seem to predominate there only.
When they're posted here advice is promptly given, the key difference is that when pepipoo first came back online we made a concerted effort to get council OPs over to the new site.

Many key contributors were invited (because we were in touch off of the platform anyway) and when pepipoo members' user IDs were usurped by someone else, we moved the cybersquatter and gave the user ID to the person we knew to be the rightful owner of the username on pepipoo.
I don't see any need for anything more than that, this site has been up for around nine months and pretty much everyone who was on pepipoo and who wanted an account on here will have made an account by now.

Not if done voluntarily by invitation there ain't? I'm not talking about a data merge, just an invite that there is a parallel universe that actually works!
Hence "could" not "would". But if it were done by invitation for example a breach may already have been made if the data were passed on in order to make the invitations.
If those invites were made by the ppp owners I imagine there would be less risk
(From a personal perspective I don't think it should be a breach but that's hardly material).
-
I think that has already been done. lots of PPP members are already on here (we'll the ones that matter ::) lol )
but there has been a warning posted by MJdev/Fredd/whoever it really is that anyone directly poaching contributors either in forum or by PM will be banned for life. not sure that will be relevant if PPP dies tho.
That threat won't trouble me of course!! I'm not sure about 'lots'? The Speeding section is barren here and blooming on PPP. This seems to be morphing into a parking forum primarily - hence my suggestion.

There could be significant data protection issues with moving membership.

There are at least two pepipoo members who are proactively attempting to deal with this problem.
Maybe too simplistic, but why not just merge Pepipoo into this site? Not necessarily 'technically' but move the membership and be done with?
-
do you mean the current issue or the ongoing failures?

Still not working this evening, I did get the error message immediately instead of waiting around for it.
-
You're right, but so could this site.
The difference is that southpaw82 owns the domain name, and if the platform that is hosting us at the moment went down for good we could get the site up and running again on a different platform in half a day, maybe a day at most.
Which Pepipoo manifestly can't do.
If sites like this one and like Pepipoo are going to provide timely and useful advice to motorists, the sites have to be reliable so that people wanting advice know that the website will be there to let them meet statutory deadlines.
If Pepipoo goes down for a few days (or nearly 4 weeks like I think it did in June) it's simply not fit for purpose.
There's no point expert posters investing time and effort in Pepipoo if it's here today, gone tomorrow. It's not a question of sentiment.
-
. . .
When Pepipoo failed last June, @cp8759, @Southpaw (and was it @JohnUK) did a great job getting this site up in no time whatsoever. . . .
Thanks for the thought, but I can claim no credit whatsoever, which is certainly due to CP, Southpaw and others.
Sorry John - I knew others had been involved in the set-up apart from CP and Southpaw, and I thought you were one of them.
And apologies to the other person (or people) whom I should have thanked.

That's why I said in my post depending on intricacies - I don't know how the domain registration has been done - if it were through CreateAForum then it could get messy, versus just being able to point it elsewhere if you have it registered directly with a registrar.
The domain is registered directly with a registrar.

I'm not even getting the error message this morning (about 1100). Safari just won't do anything, like Bob Marley, it's jammin'.

@Sparkxy
This downtime might be MJDev actually trying to get the site updated, they did say there were going to be upgrades.
you could very well be right, but if you were then it would question MJ aka Fredd (possibly, possibly not) their approach to contributors in not posting any warning. I get someone is doing something behind the scenes but it's just ridiculous not to share the plan.

This downtime might be MJDev actually trying to get the site updated, they did say there were going to be upgrades. You have to remember that the domain was renewed, which costs money, so someone has to be paying this and actioning it. Pepipoo is/was also based on an older forum software that requires manual hosting, this site is based on a forum service, so someone else manages the backend.
Pepipoo could go down again anytime as has happened this weekend.
You're right, but so could this site. Realistically this is probably less likely, but I don't know the intricacies with regards to the domain registration and other bits (i.e. how quickly the domain could be pointed elsewhere if the createaforum service disappeared).
Pepipoo is widely known, I wouldn't abandon it just in case you are going to catch people that wouldn't find this site IMO.
-
I have recently posted more frequently on Pepipoo than I have on here, but I don't really understand why it's still stumbling along. (Except it's stopped stumbling and fallen over again now)
When Pepipoo failed last June, @cp8759, @Southpaw (and was it @JohnUK) did a great job getting this site up in no time whatsoever. This site is much easier to use, has proper security and is just better all round. It also seems to be reliable.
The problem with Pepipoo is that it's very clunky and there's no security - that's unacceptable today. I referred somebody to Pepipoo from MSE a couple of weeks ago and the first thing they did was come back and say "My browser tells me the site is unsecure and unsafe. Is it really safe to use?"
The other problem - as proven again over the weekend - is that it's unreliable. If the speeding and parking experts are trying to advise posters according to statutary timescales it's no good if the site suddenly disappears for a couple of weeks with no warning and no access to it.
When Pepipoo went down in June I think it took over two weeks for the owner or an administrator to turn up and get it going again - that's no good.
I can sort of understand why some people might have some kind of sentimental attachment to Pepipoo (well no I can't actually - it's just a website) but I don't understand why a couple of established posters seem to have remained exclusively on Pepipoo and not moved over to here.
As Southpaw said previously, people are free to post on either site, both, or neither. But I think it's a great pity if some experienced posters have decide to remain solely on Pepipoo and not share their knowledge on here. Pepipoo could go down again anytime as has happened this weekend. Long term it's going nowhere.

I tried logging in numerous times yesterday with no luck and same today. same error message.

Was working fine for me yesterday although I’m getting a database error this morning.

Well it's not been there for over 30 hours now...maybe it's happened at last.

Pepipoo is still active as in being in use, but there is still no administrator, and also response times can be very lengthy at times. I do wonder if the server is in the middle of the Gobi Desert, or maybe somewhere on the Steppes of Asia ! To be honest, I prefer the new ftla.uk site because it is more up-to-date software wise and also has more room for files etc.
Notwithstanding this, I still respond to new OPs on Pepipoo.
I believe the admin is back, but not very active. Unless the original owner sold the domain to someone else so they could renew it, I don't see how anyone else has managed to renew it to 2028.
There's been a few posts back and forth with them on the forum, with offers of help with the board, but then nothing more.
It seems rumours of its passing were greatly exaggerated?
Realistically there was going to be an absolute certainty that it would have disappeared as of earlier this month due to a domain expiring. But as that domain was renewed, by someone, presumed the admin, then it won't.
-
Thanks for the exchange of messages.
-
I shall take a look.
-
PM sent but suspension still ending at the outbreak of WW1
-
Nope. Anyway, it would be a long list bearing in mind all the advertising spammers etc.
-
Nope. Do you not have a list of suspended (prob by you) members and when the unexplained suspensions should end?
-
Same username?
-
NFI - you tell me??!! Once you're suspended or banned all links are lost sol no-one can ever know as you don't find out until you log in.....and can't. It was 3-4 months ago.
-
It seems rumours of its passing were greatly exaggerated?
Yet, my 'temporary' suspension until 10 years ago is still in place!
'Your account has been temporarily suspended. This suspension is due to end on Tue, 8 Dec 1914 - 10:19.'
What was your egregious infringement?
