Hi BertiB.
Saga are dealing with the complaint. Already decided to move to another provider and just waiting on confirmation of my no claims bonus with Saga. Decided to hand this off to a specialist legal company.
Your members have been helpful just to confirm I am not insane here.

Already moved on to a more modern insurance provider.
What do you mean by this? Are you now insured with someone else and not SAGA?
-
The email says exactly as
This sentence in the subject line:
You’re Covered - Here are your Saga to indurance documents. I can send an exact image of it by private message. The Saga manager focussed on the wording of the subject line as well. You may be into something here.
-
You keep saying "your covered", does the email say that or does it say "you're covered" two different meanings. Yes I know I'm being pedantic but it makes a lot of difference in legal matters.
"Your covered.(sic" is not a cromulent sentence. It has no meaning. If you must be pedantic, it helps to be correct.
-
From what I can gather from your timeline, you contacted Saga prior to the stated renewal date to reduce the cover level , which prompted the "You're covered" email. I strongly suspect, having had insurance and observed the discrepancies between what they say and the facts* the "You're covered"
email is almost certainly system generated when a new cover commences - in this case your reduced cover, presumably for the remainder of the policy. I do not read it as indicating that the renewal, due to occur about 3 weeks later, had already been actioned.
I would say that you are generally entitled to take what they say at face value, rather that applying a cynical translation to mean something entirely different than what it says, but I, personally, would be minded to treat that as a side issue and not conflate it with the auto-renewal term, which on the face of it appears to extend the duration of the insurance contract indefinitely in 12 month chunks, subject to cancellation with notice from either party.
*A favourite being when, after cancelling the autorenewal that I never asked for of agreed to because I had found and accepted a cheaper quote, the policy expired, receiving a warning email to inform me that I was uninsured - which was a big fat lie, I was insured, just not with them.

Hi Manx Tom,
A complaint has been lodged with Saga.
I denitely received a your covered email. when ai followed the kink later. the policy documents were not visible.
I did manage to see the updted quote on the day and downloaded it. It had a document number to help saga it team track down the pdf.
The issue is:
They sent a "your covered" email 27 dec but did not back it up with documents.
I am stuck here until Saga admit the IT admin error or produce the policy documents.
Regards
Mike

Hi MickR,
There are two online statments from Saga that point to my expectation:
FAQ On their website: https://www.saga.co.uk/car-insurance/faqs?srsltid
How do I renew my policy?
You will be sent a renewal invitation at least 21 days before your renewal date. Your renewal invitation will then also be available for you to review and renew for home and motor policies on MySaga. If you pay by Direct Debit or set up a continuous payment when you took out your policy, don’t worry we will automatically renew it for you.
Once I've purchased car insurance how can I get my policy documents?
We automatically send an email with a link to your documents so that you can review and download them at any time. They will be added to your MySaga account within 24 hours. If you have requested for your documents to be sent out to you in the post, you should receive them within three to six working days.

So did you click on the link in that "You're covered etc..." email dated 27 December 2025?
Did it lead you to a certificate of insurance - or any other document - confirming your policy had renewed on 16 January 2026 and was valid until 16 January 2027?
I'm confused by a couple of things:
1. You seem to say in another post that some documents or emails or notices have disappeared from the Saga portal but you've given a verbatim account of what they said. Are you saying you saved copies before they disappeared? (We're insured with Saga and I always save copies of everyhting from the portal).
2. Did you actually check that the monthly direct debits were being taken after the renewal?
Having said all that if the renewal letter specifically said that as you paid by DD it would automatically renew without you needing to take any action, I would have relied on that
-
If no cover was actually in force at the time, does a retrospective acceptance of cover provide a defence (i.e. the accused cannot be convicted regardless) or just provide an excuse for the prosecution to withdraw the charge on the grounds of the public interest test no longer being met? There is a difference.
*If* there was no cover in place at the material time, then the intended insurer saying that as no incident occurred they would be happy to nominally retrospectively indemnify against a non-existent liability, would not change the fact that cover was not in place at the material time.
However, I would argue that insurance is a contract, and therefore a matter of construction, not a matter for one party to unilaterally deny. If the parties have "agreed" that the policy will automatically renew, on the face of it that is executory consideration from both parties and a binding contractual term, subject to any cancellation clauses.
If the Financial Services Ombudsman were to order the insurer to retrospectively provide the cover it stated it would, then I would suggest that would be the equivalent of ab initio - meaning that cover was in place at the material time, for all practical purposes the same as if a court of law found that as a matter of construction the policy was in place. I would further suggest that as a matter of public policy, for the universal scam of default auto-renewal to be workable, the party imposing the clause cannot simply wash their hands of their own failure.

Hi Southpaw,
what is not explined by saga is that I got a "Your Covered" email on 27th Dec. it must have been triggered by the agent otherwise I would have not got the "your Covered" email. Unfortunately it did not have pdf attachments with the updated policy. It just had a link to go to the portal to view documents. I can email it to you as proof.
You are right, of course. This this not fix the original police stop which did include an MIB check at the roadside.
My defence was, I took the "your Covered" email literally.
Facing denial that my renewl activity atually happend. Called for the voice logs and suspect, I am up against a big corporate here.
If they just admidded it was an IT screw up or an agent error. Then I submit that to the police. No intention of pursuing Saga.
Already moved on to a more modern insurance provider.

None of this solves the current legal issue of holding no insurance at this point, but if Saga were to admit they made an error, they can confirm cover was actually in place at the time, giving you a defence.

When was your call on the 27th December?
Big (poorly designed) corporate computer systems normally have a flaw where one piece won't talk to another quickly - systems sending letters and emails sometimes being one of them. So it is possible that perhaps your auto-renewal has been cancelled, and the policy has not been put back in place for some reason (or a computer error has occurred At this point). The renewal email was already going to wing its way to you. Have you actually paid anything for Jan's cover?
Have you, at any point, had sight of an insurance schedule or certificate? For instance, attached in the renewal email?
IMO you should send a SAR to Saga NOW including a request for call audio recordings, transcripts, or both if held, along with policy inception/expiry dates etc. I would also lodge a complaint with them regarding your renewal email.
None of this solves the current legal issue of holding no insurance at this point, but if Saga were to admit they made an error, they can confirm cover was actually in place at the time, giving you a defence.

is there a case for reasonable expectation of cover? evidence of Auto renew, "your covered" emails.
in these circumstances would most people bother to check the payment had gond out? even if it hadn't a delay on behalf the company to collect the money shouldn't negate cover surely??
-
In that case why was the February payment not taken? How about the March payment? Don't waste your money on lawyers, the court outcome will be the samel

Apologies NewJudge for the 'dumb' rating - fat fingers and now I can't undo it!

Then I think that may be your answer. I would check this out before you ”take this to court because a fixed penalty (if you are offered one) may limit the damage.
-
No Feb payment did not go out. But no email to say any dd issue. No letter either.
-
Kicked myself for not checking if Feb 2026 paymwnt had gone out...
And had it?
Road tax expired on 31 Dec 2025. Long Car MOT Fix meant could not renew tax until 21 Jan.
Road Tax has nothing to do with this.

Looked at renewal quote and can send it

You mention "monthly costs", so does that mean you were paying for the insurance on a monthly basis and have the payments been taken since your supposed renewal?
-
Hi To be accurate.
wanted to reduce my existing saga policy and called them on 24th dec 2025.then again on 27th dec 2025.
recived a "your Covered email on 27 Dec"
Stopped by Police on 23 March 2026. Showd me the MIB result showing no insurance.
Original Saga Policy Was third Party Fire & theft. Due to expire on 16 Jan 2026.
Called in december to reduce policy costs.
got an updated quote and called them back to accept it on 27 Dec.
MIB checked with Saga who profess no record of the renewal conversation. can private message you with saga email and copy of updated renewal quote.
got re[ply from police on further invetigstion with MIB. can send that separately.
Regards
Mike
-
I’m sorry but I cannot make head or tail of your post.
Can you do a timeline, in particular one which mentions when you were stopped by the police. Concentrate on dates involving insurance – when your policies began and ended and why your car was showing as uninsured on the MIB database.
-
Hi Everyone I need some urgent help.
Caught by Thames Valley police with No insurance. They showeds me online MIB result.
Been sent a NIP dated 24 March 2026.
sent proof that i recived a "your Covered" email on 27 Dec from Saga.
Can send any copies if you want to see it.
Was calling them on 24 Dec to reduce my monthly costs to third party only.
Recieved "your covered email" on 27 Decand waited until 21 jan to renew my car tax. Figured that if old policy expierd on 16th Then when I updated applied on DVLA it would check MIB and issue tax if I passed.
Called saga to speak to agent that took my call. She has left the company. Lodged complaint with Saga. Asked them to produce voice recordings. When I spoke to agent.
Taking this to court but a 65 year old pensioner on universal credit. Very Worried as lawyers quoting me over £1300 just to write to thames valley and get the case dismissed before even going to court.
Need any help you can provide. Hear good things about this forum.
Regards
Mike
