Yes - I do this every year with my not quite yet classic second car.
I have it SORN over the winter in my garages.
Take it direct to the MOT due in spring in this state.
and drive it direct back home again once passed.
Then once the weather gets better(!) I tax it for the year and use it.
Then around Nov I cancel the tax and get the refund.
Generally I arrange the MOT a week or so prior to its expiry date
One thing I do is put a sheet of paper on the passenger seat "saying this car is on SORN"
To warn the garage doing the MOT not to park much less drive the car on the road.

It's actually possible to get an MoT at any time.
The significance of the 4-week window is that your new certificate will be valid for a year from the expiry of the previous one.

When it was rumoured to have happened, dashcams weren't a thing. However, nowadays they are very useful for turning something pretty stupid into something spectacularly stupid.

More sensible than trying to do a sub 45 minute lap of the M25 with a dashcam.
Don't recall a zzr1100 doing this, but I'm someone must have given it ago.

It's insured but no point taxing over winter when I know I'm not going to ride it, and I object to buying partial months of tax.

There might be a legitimate reason why the OP wants to MoT it before the current MoT runs out - perhaps the test will be within a month of the expiration of the current one, or he is trying to sell it with a full 12 months MoT, but in my experience, people with a legitimate purpose in mind, tend to share it as relevant background information, when asking the question.
Both of the above, if I ever get around to advertising it. It's a motorcycle (ZZR1100D4) that I very rarely ride and quite expensive to tax.

Off the top of my head, the *purpose* of the journey must be to get it MoT'd (and co-incidental other purposes do not negate this - such as a minor detour to buy milk from the supermarket on the way home). What is the [main] purpose, and what is co-incidental is a matter of fact and degree.
The purpose of the exemption is to enable vehicles without a current MoT to be MoT'd, but off the top of our collective heads, there is no strict requirement that the current MoT must have expired.

However, if the OP has some other [main] purpose in mind, and is hoping that pre-booking an MoT will give him a free pass to use the car for that purpose, off the top of my head the exemption would not apply, even if he tricked us into telling him that it would.

You can take a vehicle to a PRE BOOKED mot while on a sorn.
I don't see the fact that you 'could' tax it is of any consequence.
how long is left on the current MOT?
why do you want to re mot when there is a valid one?

Can I take a SORNED vehicle to a pre-booked MOT without road tax, even though the current MOT is still valid and I could tax it?
