Lambeth - 34J Being in a bus lane - Clapham Park Road
« on: »
Hi all, new to this forum, would appreciate any help.

Genuine error here at the "notorious" left turn from Clapham Park Road / Abbeville Road. I changed lanes and didn't realise it was a bus lane until it was too late. It was at dusk, so visibility not great but not entirely dark.

Location on Google Maps

Was about to pay up before I Googled and read up to the background on this location. I note there are a few existing threads on this site, most recently here in similar circumstances - no resolution posted: https://www.ftla.uk/civil-penalty-charge-notices-(councils-tfl-and-so-on)/pcn-34j-being-in-a-bus-lane-clapham-park-road-lambeth/

Obviously frustrating as the road layout is unusual and not well signposted. Any advice on best course of action greatly appreciated, please let me know if further info required.

We've seen this a few times and even going back to the old Pepipoo forum ! Signage is key to success with an appeal here, and by 'appeal', I mean London Tribunals. London councils reject virtually all reps because they know most people then just cough-up, (>95%). So you must steel yourself to stand your ground and put all thoughts of the discount out of your head.
It may be worth looking at cases at London Tribunals using the location on the PCN as a search argument, because there have been many wins here. Having said that the council may have adjusted the signage since the last successful case, (but I doubt it)

I'll drat later. Meanwhile: screenshot the payments page as if to challenge. The dates will be wrong.

Bus lanes are my speciality.
I REGRET THAT, FOR THE PRESENT, I AM UNABLE TO TAKE ON ANY MORE CASES AS A REPRESENTATIVE AT THE LONDON TRIBUNALS. THIS IS FOR BOTH PERSONAL AND LEGAL REASONS. PLEASE DO NOT PM ME UNLESS YOU HAVE POSTED YOUR THREAD ON THE FORUM AND I WILL ATTEMPT TO GIVE ADVICE.

There are "known knowns" which we may never have wished to know. This applies to them. But in the field the idea that there are also "unknown unknowns" doesn't apply as they hide in the aleatoric lottery. I know this is true and need to be prepared knowing the "unknown unknowns" may well apply.

Thanks both, interesting stuff.

Payments page here:

Dates as per the CCTV as far as I can tell.

Challenge page is the one. With incorrect dates.

Apologies, I'm obviously missing something here.

I can go to "Challenge", then "Pay Now". I get directed to enter my PCN/VRN again. Then I get directed to a page with the same date, and CCTV evidence, appears correct.

The amount outstanding on the Charge Notice will increase to £160.00 on Thu, 5 Feb 2026. Please pay £80.00 now.

So the Issued at date doesn't match the "Date of PCN" on the letter. And the 5th Feb discount deadline date isn't 14 days before the date of issue.

What's next, informal challenge?

Too late for informal challenge - doesn't matter anyway as the law actually doesn't stipulate it. Wait for the enforcement notice and I will advise. As its' a bus lane case, I may make an exception and take it on for you. They haven't turned up for several cases recently which means they lose in this legislation. Keep an eye on the payment/representations page re the dates as they get even more whacko. ::)
