Hello,

I received a Dartford Charge (PCN) that claims that my car has been driven on The A282 Trunk Road Dartford Crossing Northbound on 13 January 2026 at 19:22pm.

I was at work in the office on 13 January 2026 and left the office at around 16:30pm and got home around 17:30pm. I currently live in Hendon, NW9.

My car was parked in West Hendon and no one else has access to it.

I am 100% certain that I was at home that day and could not have been crossing the Dartford crossing.

I have no business being on that side of London.

Below are the images of the PCN I received through the post. The images of my car isn't clear on the letter and they have not provided digital images.

To me it looks like on one of the pictures that it says 13/01/2025.

In addition, one of my front headlights stopped working in December 2025. In the image below, you can see that both headlights are working.

Is this a common mistake that happens with the Dartford charge? and how do I go on about resolving this?

Two things cause this sort of situation, (1) number plate misread, and (2) criminal cloning of the number plates.

DART are normally reasonable on this sort of thing, so first thing to do is to phone them and tell them you have not been over the DART crossing for many (months/years). Ask them to check their camera images. If they confirm they are correct, some criminal toerag has cloned your plates, so you need to report this to the police and get a crime number which you can quote on your representations against the PCN. If DART prove obdurate, you'll need to take them to the Traffic Penalty Tribunal and should win there.

Thanks for the advice. What's the best way to get high quality images from them? Is it something that I can achieve by calling them up ?

Maybe. But phone them anyway to query their numberplate read, stating you have a PCN where the photos of your numberplate are unreadable. Say you suspect they have misread the plate.

As others have said, the Dart Charge people are usually quite reasonable to deal with. I had case of "cloned" or misread plate. I have a vintage bus MLL738 which was clocked 3 times using the crossing when I know it was in the workshop at home with the engine out. when Dart checked their video, it showed an east European lorry with the same number! that country uses our now obsolete ABC123 number system.
Bus driving since 1973. My advice, if you have a PSV licence, destroy it when you get to 65 or you'll be forever in demand.
